Anime North Masquerade has the honour of being officially recognized by the International Costumers' Guild (ICG) as an international-level competition. This means that those who win Best in Show at Anime North are of the same standing as a winner of Best in Show at Worldcon and Costume-Con.

PARENTS: All lost children are escorted to Event Operations to await your arrival. With over 400 vendors, attendees can explore a vast array of merchandise. Leading anime, manga, gaming, fashion companies will also be previewing upcoming releases and connecting with fans at their industry booths.
The Masquerade is in the TCC North Building, this means the Masquerade will NOT require audience members to get a wristband. If you plan to sit with friends, we recommend you arrive at the main room early to claim your seats. You are required to have a valid Anime North convention badge for Saturday to watch the Masquerade.

Anime Expo features many events and activities during the convention for attendees to take part in such as guest panels, tabletop gaming, competitions, an arcade, and concerts. COSPLAY IS AN ALL-AGES EVENT. There will have one competition for children 13 and under and then a contest for anyone else entered. The Cosplay choice should be considered a PG-13 rated event at the most. The judgement of what is acceptable is left to the sole discretion of the Cosplay Director and Retropalooza staff.

Attendees are permitted to bring in food and beverage for personal consumption only. This means only food and drink that you would be able to consume individually. English speakers often pronounce anime as Ah-nee-mey, but this an anglicization of the word. The correct pronunciation of anime is Ah-nee-meh. The difference is that the final syllable is not pronounced with an "ey" sound, but it is pronounced with a short "e", which is with an "eh" sound.
You may need to request days off at work or clear your schedule on the convention days so you have enough time to experience the convention. If you do not pre-register for the anime convention, you can still pick up your pass at the door. But it will likely be more expensive and you will have to wait in a longer line.
When planning and building your costume, please keep this in mind. A standard entry door is 3 feet wide and 6 feet 8 inches tall. If your costume is larger than this in any direction, you will have trouble getting on and off stage: be sure to contact the masquerade department head immediately at [email protected] so that you can discuss your plans and determine if your planned costume is viable for the loading/unloading area and stage.
The Masquerade team will email the primary contact for your entry with important updates. It is your responsibility to keep your contact information up to date. If your email bounces twice with one week between attempts, your entry will be deleted. Updates can be emailed to [email protected].
When you arrive at Main Programming for the show itself, you must be stage ready, meaning that you are in costume and ready for walk-on or skit performance. All contestants will need to be there. No exceptions.
There is a time limit of two (2) minutes 30 seconds on skits, including any set-up and/or teardown time. Extensions will NOT be given. If your skit is affecting the flow of the program, or is running excessively long, we reserve the right to interrupt and end your performance. If your skit is interrupted, it will not disqualify you from winning any of the awards, unless you refuse to leave the stage.
Each contestant may wear a limit of one costume. Multiple entries worn by the same person, or one entry worn by multiple people at different times, will not be allowed. No exceptions.
There will be separate times for skit review. You do not need to be in costume for check-in.

Novice: The Novice division exists to encourage people who are new to costuming and masquerades to compete. DO NOT enter the Novice division if: You are a professional costumer. You have competed or won an award in Journeyman/Masters/Advanced at Anime Austin or any other convention.
Ice Skates (with or without the guards) are not allowed as either shoes OR props. No regular skates or rollerblades allowed inside the event space. Shoes may be removed for photo shoots only and must be worn at all other times. Socks do not count as shoes. A sturdy covering on the bottom of your foot is a must.
There will be no skit entries for 2020. Group entries are allowed, limit of 8 entrants. Competing in multiple groups is NOT allowed. Cosplays that have won awards at conventions of a smaller size (calculated by attendance) are allowed.
