“Otaku” is pretty much an insult. It means obsession (possibly unhealthy) about something. Also, “otaku” does not mean “anime”. There are “train otaku” (obsessed with trains), “gun otaku”, etc. Stereotypical otaku portrayed in anime is usually overweight unkempt guys in glasses, carrying a lot of anime merchandise.
