“Otaku” is pretty much an insult. It means obsession (possibly unhealthy) about something. Also, “otaku” does not mean “anime”. There are “train otaku” (obsessed with trains), “gun otaku”, etc. Stereotypical otaku portrayed in anime is usually overweight unkempt guys in glasses, carrying a lot of anime merchandise. Frankly speaking there is no limit on number of animes you have to watch to be called an Otaku. Many consider Otaku's to lack social contact and all but I don't think so. You can be an Otaku while maintaining a healthy social lifestyle. Otakus are not limited to animes only.
