What's particularly enjoyable about A Whisker Away is that it manages to steer clear of the typical tendency of anime to overload a movie with far too many themes, side stories, and minor characters. It does this while still keeping all of the style, surrealism, and unusual humor that defines the best anime.

However, there is this one scene where Miyo was an elementary student as she threw her shoes at two boys for bullying another girl. Also, there is a few swearing in that film.
The one thing A Whisker Away really has going for it is its emotional drama, which almost works and could have been downright moving if the badly-done romance story didn't drag everything down. Everyone involved has made better anime before. Rather than a new hit for Netflix, A Whisker Away is a sad disappointment.
Weathering With You is definitely more heartfelt than heartbreaking, although there are several tear-jerking moments throughout the film. The penultimate spot, however, goes to the moment when Hina is taken by the sky as a sacrifice to normalize the weather, and Hodoka wakes up to find her missing.

Family-friendly anime comes in a few flavors: tragic, cute, and weird. A Whisker Away is the last two. It’s very cute, especially if you like cats, and has a surprisingly touching and heartfelt story. It’s also got a healthy helping of strangeness, mostly in the form of the Mask Seller, who is equal parts Cheshire Cat and Ursula, the campy villainess from The Little Mermaid. It’s a fun combination, but it’s also…weird. That said, there aren’t as many “lost in translation” moments as you sometimes get with anime productions. Not everything that is expected or traditional in Japanese storytelling translates smoothly for a western audience, but by and large this is quite accessible.
What “A Whisker Away” loses in terms of flow and legibility, it makes up for in its celebration of the fullness of human life; the ups and downs these characters feel can be hard to keep up with, but as the human and cat worlds blur together it becomes increasingly palpable that Miyo and Kento are learning to appreciate how the sweet only tastes so good because of the sour. If a climactic trip to the Ghibli-esque Cat Island (a feline cornucopia that’s built into a floating tree and replete with bars and bathhouses) is too frenetic for its own good — this frothy modern fable lacking the foundation it needs to support such a massive spike of world-building — it only makes it that much easier to appreciate how eager Miyo and Kento are to get back home and make the most of the love they’ve been given. Fun and winsome and always full of life, “A Whisker Away” naturally finds a way to land on its feet.
It’s easy to appreciate why Netflix ’s latest anime import has been retitled “ A Whisker Away ” for its worldwide release. Not only is it a cute and well-earned pun on “Spirited Away,” it’s also a pretty succinct way of cobbling together this movie’s two major selling points, childhood fantasy and giant-eyed felines. On the other hand, the project’s amazingly expressive original title — literally translated from Japanese as “Wanting to Cry, I Pretend to Be a Cat” — really cuts to the heart of the matter.

An unlikable protagonist isn't necessarily a death knell to a movie like this. To Okada's credit, Miyo is a fairly realistic portrayal of such a character. She has issues with familial abandonment and depression; the most successfully emotionally-affecting aspect of the movie is the way her transformation powers function as a metaphor of sorts for self-harm.
While most of Okada's anime tend to skew towards older audiences looking back on their youth, this is her first movie that seems directly targeted towards kids. Maybe that's where the issues come up; it's not impossible to tell honest stories about depression for a young audience (just look at Kiki's Delivery Service, Inside Out or Where the Wild Things Are for top-notch examples), but without experience writing for children, the movie's in an awkward space. It's too simplistic for adults, but probably too boring for kids.
