When Shoya and Shoko started spending time with each other, he asked her if she wanted to see anyone else that was in their middle school class. The only classmate that was close to her back then was Miyoko. Shoya didn't have a way to find her at first, causing him and Shoko to look for her together.
When the characters began working on their movie, they had a lot of different ideas, which caused conflict. Though most of them didn't want her in it, Shoya asked Shoko to join them in making the film.
After Shoya woke up, he found Shoko and told her everything that he wanted to, from apologizing for how he wronged her to letting her know that she gave him the strength to live, which brought them even closer together. When Shoya returned to school, he tried to embrace the world around him and not ignore others, which Shoko helped him out with.
The majority of the first volume takes place a few years prior to the rest of the series. When Shoya was a kid, all that he wanted was to beat boredom, which resulted in him doing some bad things. However, he became much worse when Shoko, a deaf girl, joined his class. He made fun of, bullied, and harassed her.
When Shoya, Shoko, Yuzuru, Tomohiro, Naoka, Miki, Satoshi, and Miyoko all started hanging out, they decided to go to an amusement park. Though they should have all had fun, Naoka ruined Shoya's day by trying to get him and his old friend, Kazuki, to talk. Afterward, she and Shoko went on a Ferris wheel together, where they talked about their past.
After reuniting with Shoko, Shoya wanted to become her friend. This gave him a reason to not kill himself, but he wasn't sure if he would be able to make up for his mistakes and be friends with her. As he tried to figure things out, he met two other characters that would become close friends of his: Tomohiro and Yuzuru.
Shoya used all of his strength to save Shoko from falling to her death. Although he saved her, he fell instead and was saved by Kazuki and Keisuke. In the hospital, the Nishimiya family begged his mother for forgiveness, causing the two families to get closer to each other.
