Summary

As a wild youth, elementary school student Shouya Ishida sought to beat boredom in the cruelest ways. When the deaf Shouko Nishimiya transfers into his class, Shouya and the rest of his class thoughtlessly bully her for fun. However, when her mother notifies the school, he is singled out and blamed for everything done to her.

Praise

There are a lot of things that set A Silent Voice in a field above other short animated content. One, being its accessibility, both physically (to watch) and emotionally (to relate to).

Childhood Friends

A Silent Voice is a story of redemption. Shouya’s life grew increasingly unbearable in the years after he’d been pinned as a schoolyard bully. Nothing he did could dissuade other students from seeing him as a bad guy, so he quit trying, and grew depressed.

Naoka

Shouya was the boy bully leader in their grade school group, and Naoko was the girl bully leader. Naoka didn’t get punished like Shouya, but it’s to be assumed she also received a fair amount of social exclusion for her part in Shouko’s bullying.

True Toxicity

The true toxicity in A Silent Voice is in Naoka’s insistent presence, not her actions.
