It has a great selection of characters that flourish in this narrative setting, not stifled by gameplay. The story is basic but wonderfully executed and the overall presentation is great. If you're a fan of the Senran Kagura series, do give this a look, it's still great to watch today.

Senran Kagura: Estival Versus – Festival Eve Full of Swimsuits. An anime OVA released with the special editions of Estival Versus, is explicitly canon to the events of that game, and take place within a few days before the start of Estival Versus.
If you're a Japanese gaming fan, there's no doubt you've heard of Senran Kagura, the popular franchise from Marvelous that focuses on a large cast of female ninjas. It's amassed an impressive amount of sales, with its video game sector attaining over 1.65 million copies sold.
While the animation effort does have its moments, it is not above using extended scenes of still shorts (although thankfully not commonly) or taking big shortcuts. Blood and grievous bodily injury are rare, so the TV-MA rating is entirely for the fan service .
In the meantime, Senran Kagura Estival Versus is still a fun dive into ecchi action gaming you rarely see in the West today and it certainly is worth it if you're comfortable with the fanservice out of Warriors/Musou-style games.
Senran Kagura is like one of those bait and switches, you're promised a cake, you get broccoli, you're promised money, you get bills and in this case, you're promised badassery, but you get crap. Senran Kagura has to be one of the lamest anime I've ever seen.

Asuka and Homura are forced inside a shinobi barrier where they must face against Dougen's secret ninja art, Orochi, whilst the other shinobi team up to fight against a legion of mechanical guards. Homura prepares to sacrifice herself to stop Dougen, but Asuka holds her back, asking her to have faith in her friends.
It is revealed that Yagyuu looks after Hibari because Yagyuu sees a lot of her late sister in Hibari. Hanzou returns to the Academy to discuss the situation with Kiriya and informs him that "it is time to find a successor to the super secret ninja arts". The scroll that contains these arts chooses its owner.
Whilst Ikaruga and Katsuragi push past Yomi and Hikage, Yagyuu catches up to Hibari and manage to get past Haruka and Mirai. As Asuka reaches the top of the tower and once again clashes with Homura, Dougen makes his appearance, stating he plans to wield the power of the scrolls by using them as vessels.
On their way home, Asuka and Ikaruga are attacked by one of the enemy shinobi, Yomi. Yomi engages Ikaruga in battle and overwhelms her with her array of weapons before taking her leave.
Asuka, Ikaruga, Katsuragi, Yagyu and Hibari are five school girls who secretly train in the ninja arts. As they are sent by their mentor, Kiriya, to handle some delinquents in town, Asuka meets a girl named Homura and helps guide her through town, unaware that she is secretly an enemy shinobi.
The opening theme is "Scarlet Master" by Sayaka Sasaki, while the ending theme is "Junsei Erotic" (純正エロティック) by Mia REGINA.

A primary antagonist who originally appeared as an unnamed investor of Hebijo Academy. In Burst he was named and drove Hanzo and Hebijo into conflict in order to summon a huge Youma: Orochi. Afterwards he was seemingly killed by Homura; however in Deep Crimson he returned and summoned countless Youma to terrorize Kyoto later, even becoming a Youma himself. The reason he did this was to cause Kagura to fully awaken so he could steal her power, but he was later annihilated by Kagura along with True Orochi.
