Value, or the lightness or darkness of a color, also has a huge role to play in the aesthetic. Most anime contains three distinct levels of lighting: shadow, lit, and specular.

So how are we approximating this look?

The basics are handled by our toon shader, which we generated in a convenient Unity asset called Toony Colors Pro 2 by Jean Moreno (JMO). The shader generates outlines along the boundaries of the mesh and condenses our lighting gradient into the same three levels featured in anime.
