Characters appearing in A Place Further than the Universe. A second-year high school student who, upon uncovering an old journal, vows to do something to shake up her ordinary, un-adventurous high school life.
Award Snub: To state that many fans are outright disappointed that A Place Further Than the Universe didn't get to win the Anime of the Year Award (or any award, in that) during Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2018 is quite a massive understated opinion in itself.
To boot, in the final episode, it's revealed that Megumi literally went to the opposite pole of the world in her own expedition to the Arctic by following Kimari's example to be adventurous and independent. Foreshadowing: As early as in Episode 7, Megumi was researching on the polar territories.
Title Drop: The anime's title comes from a book written by Shirase's mother. Title-Only Opening: In Episode 12, the credits are superimposed before the Episode Title Card instead of using the standard opening sequence since it would clash with the drama-heavy mood of the episode.
While Hinata's teammates did their deeds to alienate and hurt Hinata to hide from their own mistakes, Megumi did it in a misplaced effort not to lose Kimari; also, while Hinata's teammates tried to force their way back into Hinata's life, Megumi tried to remove herself from Kimari's life out of shame.
Expository Hairstyle Change: In the final episode, she has Hinata cut her hair to a shoulder bob reminiscent to her mother's, to symbolize the growth she has made in Antarctica. Foil: To Hinata. In contrast to Hinata, Shirase has a refined and mature appearance, but is actually very goofy and rash.
Oblivious Guilt Slinging: Throughout Episode 5, she makes a point of telling Megumi how grateful she is for their friendship, which only makes Megumi feel worse, since not only was Megumi responsible for the rumors, but Megumi admits that she was dependent on Kimari all this time.
All of the Other Reindeer: Shirase gets this frequently at school, due to her fierce dedication to travel to Antarctica. Since most people think her goal is an impossible one, she's often mocked for it, and some students even call her "Antarctica" as a not-so-flattering nickname. Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Subverted.
Turn the Other Cheek: She immediately forgives Megumi when the latter confesses she had been trying to discourage Kimari's wishes to go to Antarctica. Mainly because she never was offended in the first place. Daughter of Takako Kobuchizawa, an explorer who wrote the book A Place Further Than The Universe.
Jumped at the Call: Shirase never hesitates to take any opportunities to go to Antarctica, such as when Yuzuki first offers to let her go in her place. Large Ham: When her headstrong nature takes over, Shirase can chew the scenery with the best of them.
Affectionate Nickname: Mari's friends call her "Kimari", which starts off as an Ironic Name since kimari means "set decision", something Mari initially has trouble with. Big Ol' Eyebrows: Has the thickest eyebrows of the main four girls, if not the entire cast. Captain Morgan Pose: in the opening.
Even among the expedition members, Gin has this especially bad, as Episode 9 drops several hints that Takako was more than just a friend and coworker to her.
Suspiciously Similar Song: The scary music that plays during episode 4 (when Kimari is confronted by her mom about her plans) and Episode 6 (when Shirase realizes that she had Hinata's passport in her purse all along) is more than a little reminiscent of the iconic theme of Jaws.
One Step is a heart-thumping song that compels you to take the first step to make true of dreams that for others might seem to be impossible to reach. Saigo Made Akiramenai (Never Give Up) is practically the series in a nutshell.
Shirase certainly counts as well, considering the fact that she lost her mother and everyone at her school seems to outright bully and mock her at worst, or consider her a weirdo and keep their distance at best. Basically the original crew from the first expedition three years prior.
She ends up going to great lengths to sabotage Kimari's trip to Antarctica because she's jealous of her new friends, but more importantly she's scared of losing her Only Friend for good. Advertisement: Shirase's mother Takako takes the Determinator deconstruction even further.
Shirase's mother Takako takes the Determinator deconstruction even further. She managed to piece together the first civilian expedition to Antarctica seemingly single-handedly just by never giving up and getting others to follow her lead, and she winds up leading a large expedition who are completely loyal to her.
She doesn't end up being the driving force behind the plot or any of the other characters' development; with no deeper reasons for going to Antarctica rather than having an adventure, she ends up being a Pinball Protagonist who's just excited to be there, just the same as the audience.
