Anime isn't for everybody. It would be nice if they considered it, but a person isn't necessarily any better or any worse for not watching anime. A persuasive speech is significantly stronger if you let your audience draw their own conclusions, rather than forcing it down their throat.
Those who are fans of this genre would completely agree and agree that it deserves much more respect than it has garnered. But for some reason, people are thought to stay away from anime due to particular preconceived notions that are unbeknownst to me.
You have to remember the stigma is cartoons are for kids (and anime are cartoons.) I think you would be better served by emphasizing that anime is just like every other medium (live action TV, books, comics, etc.) in that there is crap and there is gold.
