What is a-Kon?

For the musician, see Akon. A-Kon is an annual four-day anime convention held during June at the Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas / Toyota Music Factory in Irving, Texas. First held in 1990 with just 380 people in attendance, A-Kon is North America's longest running convention primarily focused on anime.

What is a Naka-Kon convention?

The convention typically offers an Artist Alley, contests, Dealers’ Room, game shows, fashion show, maid cafe, panels, showings, video game rooms, and workshops. Naka-Kon was founded in 2005 by members of the University of Kansas Anime Club.

Anime Unchained reflects that every facet of our community has grown, but not at the cost of its identity or spirit.

Departments

A-Kon consists of many volunteer managed teams each dedicated to operating a portion of this large convention. Each year, usually in February or March, they post a web page for volunteer sign-up. Volunteers work at least sixteen hours during the weekend and receive a free pass to the convention.

Programming

While the focus of the convention was originally centered on anime fandom and screenings of films and television series, many other activities take place encompassing various segments of geek and Japanese pop culture.

History

The name seems to be a play on the early anime series Project A-ko. A-Kon 2020 was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A-Kon 2021 was also cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Where is the Naka Kon convention?

Naka-Kon is an annual three-day anime convention held during March at the Overland Park Convention Center and Sheraton Overland Park Hotel at the Convention Center in Overland Park, Kansas. The name of the convention comes from the Japanese word for "center/middle".

When is Naka Kon 2021?

Naka-Kon will hold a virtual convention in March 2021, a smaller event over Labor Day weekend in September, and in 2022 move to Memorial Day weekend in May.
