For many adults, anime is simply something that they grew up with, much like people who grew up reading comics or watching Star Wars. The love never goes away; fans just simply evolve as they get older. Some adults do take the path to marriage, kids, and a career and give up their old interests, but some don't.

One of the most recurring and defined cultural themes across anime is their strong attachment to Japanese mythology. Whether kids are befriending yokai or demon hunters are fighting oni, the extravagant spiritual figures and legends within Japanese mythology have done a good job of making themselves known and feared within anime.
In this anime, Kunihiki Ikuhara taps into the lore of the frog like amphibious spirit of Japan's depths and gives them his special brand of surreal and intense imagery. After three boys accidentally break a kappa statue, they find that they've been cursed and connected to its leading deity to combat a new spiritual threat in the world.
Mushishi is an anime that directly inhabits some of Japan's deepest sects of mythology and folktales. Using various inspirations for its occult nature, this series focuses on one of its titular "Mushishi," Ginko, as he examines and investigates the various occurrences of spirits within his world.

Having sacrificed an eye and a leg to do so, Kotoko now acts as both a mediator and an investigator to the spirits' various issues, while she also pursues her own romantic interest with a new boy on the block with his own unique attachment to the occult.

2 Gintama . A huge anime, Gintama is an anime that takes place in the Feudal era of Japan. In this world, Japan has been taken over by aliens and the samurai have lost their powers. Our main character, Gintoki is forced to go from job to job because of it.
Because of that, there are warriors that are rounded up and sent to fight them. The story follows one of the samurai, Jinbei Tsukishima. He's a member of the City Patrol, and he is the one who takes the place of his father, who cannot fight anymore.
Considering that, they are among the biggest sources of inspiration for Japanese artists. Animators have brought samurai history to life through anime , creating some amazing fight sequences and even better discussions on honor and friendship.
6 Sengoku Basara (Samurai Kings) This anime manages to combine superpowers and samurai swordsmanship all into one neat package. It's a nice mix of the modern and the old fashioned, which is what makes it such a good anime.

Samurai 7, is, you guessed it, based on the film Seven Samurai. It is very similar to the film. It's set in a futuristic world that has just been through a war that has put it on the brink of extinction. Villages and cities are being torn apart by bandits who were once samurai soldiers.

People have created all kinds of theories to explain these woodland creatures. Some claim Totoro is based off of specific Japanese folk creatures like Koropokkuru. And a few years ago, a wild conspiracy theory categorized him as a ‘god of death.’.
When you understand the world that Miyazaki comes from, with inherent beliefs in kami and yokai, you can appreciate Totoro for what it is. Like a yokai, Totoro is a strange creature with strange attributes (and a strange catbus friend). Like a yokai, Totoro hangs out in trees and actually helps them grow.
According to the page on Shinto on BBC Religions, kami is both that ‘life essence’ that is in everything as well as the gods (Amaterasu), natural objects (a mountain), natural forces (storms), animals (yes, your beloved dog), and even the souls of humans who lived particularly good lives.
The yokai is the spirit who hangs out by that river for kicks. And there would be many other yokai that live on that mountain. These beings have existed in Japanese folklore for centuries. A kodama from “Princess Mononoke” and the soot spirits from “Spirited Away.”.
Like a kami, Totoro helps Mei and Satsuki throughout the movie. Their father even goes to the shrine at the tree where Totoro lives and he and the girls thank Totoro for keeping an eye on Mei — just like someone would thank a kami.
But essentially, yokai seem to be smaller beings that exist in more specific ways than kami. Let’s go back to that mountain. If the mountain is a kami, then other objects on the mountain are their own kami: there is a kami for the river on the mountain, and there is a kami for the trees growing on it, too.
