One of the most popular genres of anime is science fiction, with some of the highest-rated movies and series being categorized as such. Those looking for adventures that explore the far reaches of space or ask the big what-if questions of life in the future will find that Japanese animation has them covered.
The fun, easy-to-watch show based in the far future follows Spike Spiegel, a chill, easy-going bounty hunter. He travels alongside his companions completing bounties to make some cash and explore the galaxy.
This Japanese cyberpunk anime is based on the highly-acclaimed manga of the same name, following the story of a technologically advanced cyborg public security agent named Mokoto who is faced with the psychological ideas of what makes humanity and self-identity.
Mecha anime continues to use Gundam as a reference to this day. After space colonies under the control of the Principality of Zeon have declared war on the Earth Federation in a more advanced timeline, they must fight back with their brand new RX-78 Gundam mobile suit.
The show was about a highly advanced robot abandoned by his creator who goes through many challenges in a timeline set 40 years in the future, being the year 2000. Astro Boy brings up themes of anti-war, the preservation of nature, and societal discrimination.
4 Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995) After dangerous monsters appear on Earth with a goal to kill all humans, the main protagonist gets sucked into a world of mecha-fighting unlike any other. The series is applauded for its stunning artwork, coherent plot, and lack of typical sci-fi plot holes.
Two orphans, Simon and Kamina, escape their sad lives under the ground and head to the surface, where they find companions to help them gain peace with the dangerous, robotic fiends and Beastmen. The anime is loved for its colorful art style and smooth, clean animation during fast-paced action scenes.
Ghost in the Shell is a story that explores what it means to be human in a world of ever-increasing human-machine hybridization. In this future, people have all sorts of cybernetic enhancements, implants, and mechanical parts, with only a few people remaining fully natural. This calls into question whether self-aware computer programs and human-looking and human-thinking robots should be given the same legal rights as natural-born humans. Main characters are thrust into constant self-doubt over whether they themselves deserve human rights when they're not really very human anymore. Criminals try to exploit this self-doubt and confusion caused by the technologies to their own advantage. I like Ghost in the Shell for focusing more on philosophy than other anime series. Sometimes, the philosophizing slows the plot down, but most of the time, the show is still pure action, and the philosophical debates are often settled by the often amazing courses of the show's events. It's important, I think, to watch this show, because as a society we're putting so much value on, and faith in, new technology, without fully considering the philosophical implications that might arise.
The main character is an energetic, pink-haired girl wielding a steel boomerang, who isn't afraid to speak truth to power. She's part of an underground resistance movement known as Metal Age. This show has a lot of interesting and fun characters and just looks amazing.
In the future, Japan has become a literal jungle, except for a tower occupied by the very rich. "Monetized carbon" is the buzzword of the day, as carbon taxes and drastic measures to reduce carbon emissions have completely changed modern society.
As everyone here, add some real sci-fi anime, you might think of ULYSSES 31 a futuristic transposition of the Odyssey. It take places in the 31st Century... It is very creative even by today's standard and is a good introduction to Greek mythology as well as a reflexion on the human condition.
Science fiction is a juggernaut of a genre that spans virtually all media from books to comics to anime. Typical of the genre is a focus on futuristic and out-there concepts that range from advanced technologies to time travel and alien life. Anime has quite a few shows that fall under this broad grouping with accompanying themes of drama, romance, ...
This anime takes place in a fantasy and sci-fi world where a massive abyss exists, one that leads down into the depths of the earth. This crevasse is filled with strange beings and high-tech relics of a time long past. It is regularly explored by people known as divers, one of which is the novice diving protagonist Riko, the daughter of a missing in action expert diver, Lyza.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a classic military space opera that tells an intricately realized plot in its 110 episode span. Viewers are introduced to a world where a more than century-long war has been taking place between the hierarchical Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance.

The year is 2030, alien insectoids have overrun the earth claiming it for themselves. They stalk the world killing humans and harvesting them as food. As a result, most of mankind has fled to a large space station that hovers above the planet.
Are you a fan of Cowboy Bebop? Have you often found yourself wishing for more? Well, look no further. Introducing, Outlaw Star, a high-octane thrill ride through the deepest regions of the cosmos.
Spriggan is awesome, end of story. Go and watch it right now. When I first saw it I thought wow, this is Metal Gear Solid the anime. Seriously, it has everything a Metal Gear game has and more.
Battle Angel Alita is the epitome of what anime is all about. Gritty, deep, ambitious, unabashed and beautifully drawn, this short-lived anime explores a number of issues now uncomfortably all too relevant in our modern age.
This is one of, if not my favorite anime movie of all time. It comes from the brilliant mind of Hideyuki Kikuchi the author behind the Vampire Hunter D series. Perhaps more post-apocalyptic than sci-fi, it still showcases many of the themes and tropes associated with the science fiction genre.
Cyber City Oedo 808 is pure 90’s anime gold and another personal favorite of mine. An all too short 3-episode ova, it simply oozes with the style and flash of a futuristic dystopian tomorrow.
Set in a flashy yet macabre cyberpunk future heavily influenced by source material such as Bladerunner, A.D Police files follows the advanced police force as they tackle cybernetically enhanced criminals and rampant cyborgs known as ‘Boomers’.
