For those curious, Mikako actually does survive after the end of the movie. Her robot gets rescued. Meanwhile the UN decides to send a rescue party to appease the masses and Noboru signs up immediately. Mikako and the survivors find out and realize all they have to do is hope the ship they're on lasts until then.

Following the success of both Your Name and Weathering with You, Makoto Shinkai has another movie coming out this November and it looks amazing. Called Suzume no Tojimari, which roughly translates to Suzume's Door-Locking, it features 17-year-old Suzume's journey, which begins in a quiet town in Kyushu.

The voice actors do their job well. There is no need for anything too flashy, because it is not the point of Voices of a Distant Star.
The writing is top notch, even if the story in itself is nothing special. Animation: Again, nothing unique, and what was at the time quite good does not hold up perfectly. The concept art is good, but not exceptional. There are many things going for it, but in the end, this is probably the weakest point of the anime.

Although it looks like a studio work, Voices of a Distant Star is a personal film, made almost entirely by a single artist, Makoto Shinkai. Mikako and Noboru are separated at the beginning of high school in 2046. She's accepted into the training program for mecha pilots to fight the aliens who attacked human settlements on Mars.
