Blaming a show for being derivative in anime is easy but wrong, as the world of references and structures in which anime thrives is as much of a strength as weakness. Maybe the way to describe the failure is that this is a show that feels like you've already watched it when viewing it for the first time.
Toma quickly realizes that these people do not care for Index in the least and decides to protect her. Unfortunately he is up against powerful mages but he has an ace up his sleeve: His right hand has the power to cancel any magic it touches.

As Toma and his group try to track down Oriana, they discover that a “Shorthand”—a specialized spell that operates on its own once being cast—is shorting out their magic. Before they can deactivate it, though, an incident happens at the middle school.
