A sequel was announced in October 2012, with the cast and staff from the first season confirming their return in the same month. A Certain Scientific Railgun S aired in Japan on April 12, 2013, consisting of twenty-four episodes, and concluded on September 27. A third season was announced in October 2018.
The first season aired in 2008 and was followed by two seasons in 2010 and 2011. Season 3 ended on October 5, 2018with 1/3 of the story still left to be covered. In April 5, 2019, it was confirmed that there would be a fourth season will be released on 2022..
The final spin-off is A Certain Scientific Accelerator. It follows the character known only as 'Accelerator' and his own separate adventures from the Index series.
Regardless of quality, Index is still the main series. Railgun might handle certain arcs (and characters) better than Index, but the latter is more relevant when it comes to worldbuilding, plot development, and character follow-up.
There are a number of elements that make A Certain Scientific Railgun an excellent viewing experience. Everything from all that is Academy City, the characters and supporting cast, (English dub) voice acting, soundtrack/score, character design, animation and the lore are all fantastic.
There won't be Railgun Season 4 for a long time. There isn't much material to cover from manga at the moment. The next arc is "Jailbreaker Arc" which it is still ongoing right now.

Watching A Certain Magical / Scientific Series in its chronological order is highly recommended. It has a higher emotional impact and preserves the mystery of the rest of the seasons. The first Blu-ray and DVD compilation of the third season of A Certain Magical Index was released on December 26, 2018. The first and fifth volume sets are bundled with episodes 6 and 7 of A Certain Magical Index-tan bonus anime parody. A 7-disc Blu-ray box set will be released in Japan on September 29, 2021.
